Horses Arrive for Airnorth Cable Beach Polo (Wed 23 May, 9am)

Airnorth Cable Beach Polo is pleased to welcome Patrons and players, as well as 45 horses and 12 groomsmen in preparation for the 2018 tournament in Broome, held 26 and 27 May. The horses, especially chosen for their agility to perform in the 110m x 50m beach polo arena, will enjoy an opportunity to familiarise with the playing conditions of Cable Beach next Wednesday morning, having arrived in Broome earlier in the week.

Competing for the coveted Paspaley Australasian Beach Polo Cup are three teams featuring some of Western Australia’s most accomplished players including Matt Welsh, Luke Reid, Richard Rawlings, Eru Barlow and Tim Broadfoot. Matt Welsh has recently been selected by the Australian Polo Federation for the 18 goal Australian Polo Team to play at the Zambia International Series from 13-15 July this year alongside winner of the 2017 Paspaley Australasian Beach Polo Cup, Hugo Fischer.

A playground for international champions, the sands of Cable Beach have been acclaimed to be among the best playing conditions for beach polo in the world due to the consistency of sand and tidal movements which form a naturally compact playing arena. The event is massive logistic undertaking with preparations for the Airnorth Cable Beach Polo well underway including a shipment of Perrier-Jouët champagne, 30m marquee, 20 lounge suites, 18 gazebos, 12 umbrellas, 2 bars, mobile kitchen and a DJ on a square stage. Throughout the three-day festival, the event is specially scheduled to fall within favourable tide conditions, with the infrastructure rebuilt three times over the weekend in order to accommodate rising tides in the evening.

The Airnorth Cable Beach Polo is worth an estimated $2.8million to the local economy, engaging upwards of 30 crew members and directly spending over $200,000 with local suppliers. In celebration of the annual event, Cable Beach Polo publishes a tourism-focused magazine which is distributed to approximately 900,000 passengers on Airnorth flights, and through accommodation and restaurants around Broome.

Commencing Friday 25 May, the Airnorth Cable Beach Polo festival kicks off with a FREE opening party at The Mangrove Hotel, followed by two days of vigorous polo and a closing party also at The Mangrove Hotel.

The famous Saturday night Dinner Under The Stars will feature Executive Chef Jack Stein who will dedicate an episode of his television series, “Born to Cook – Jack Stein Down Under” toward his quest to find the finest Kimberley produce to prepare a sumptuous meal for the Dinner’s 200 guests. Produced by Western Australian company MAGO Films, the series is broadcast internationally, reaching an audience of millions. Tickets are still available and can be purchased from  www.cablebeachpolo.com
